What to see by car: Budapest

It's worth taking the time to see the city's hinterlands, home to verdant countryside
and historic towns. The town of Szentendre is 20kms from Budapest and dates
back to the 14th century. It's a cultural and tourist centre, as well as a town
of arts and artists, situated right on the bank of the Danube. Szentendre has
a unique atmosphere and is home to Serb Orthodox monuments as well as 12 museums
- including an open-air museum.
The hilly terrain along the Danube is picturesque, and makes a lazy boat ride
worthwhile. Travel back in time to the 13th century, as you climb high atop
a hill in Visegrád to Solomon's Tower, one of central Europe's largest
and best- preserved Romanesque castle keeps.
About two hours away from Budapest is the town of Egar. This majestically preserved
Baroque town is nestled between two hill ranges and has a calming, pervasive
atmosphere. The 13th century castle and more recent cathedral are outstanding.
Also not to be missed is a nearby valley which is home to quiet vineyards.
If you don't mind a lengthy but pleasant drive, then head to Lake Balaton.
Located several hours south of Budapest, it is Europe's largest lake and boasts
several charming resorts along its northern shores.
