Mini guide to Carrickfergus
Situated on the north shore of Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus is one of the oldest
towns in Northern Ireland and boasts a fantastic Norman castle. This picturesque
town in County Antrim is also a popular leisure destination for sailors and it
has an excellent marina that is highly regarded.
The highlight of Carrickfergus is without a doubt the imposing 12th century
Norman castle that dominates the impressive harbour. The castle, one of the
finest examples of its type in all of Europe, is well preserved and has a museum.
It also offers outstanding views of the harbour and town.
The excellent Blue Flag Carrickfergus Marina is located near the town centre
and teams up with the castle and 17th century city walls to add real character
to this quaint town. Other attractions worth seeing in and around the town are
the superb Carrickfergus Museum, the 12th century St Nicholas Church and the
Gasworks Museum of Ireland.
Carrickfergus plays host to numerous festivals and events throughout the year
including garden and flower shows, and there are also several parks within the
city where you can relax in peaceful surroundings. Local leisure activities
include sailing, water sports and horseback riding, while there are plenty of
traditional pubs and cafés in the town where you can grab a bite to eat.
Surrounded by gorgeous countryside and sparkling beaches, Carrickfergus is
ideal for horseback riding or a leisurely ramble. A wealth of rivers and lakes
in the region provide visitors with attractive leisure alternatives, in particular
the largest body of water in the British Isles, Lough Neagh.
The main A2 highway feeds Carrickfergus from Belfast, while trains run here
from Belfast, Antrim and Dublin throughout the day. Translink buses run from
Belfast International Airport to Belfast and Ulsterbus runs services from Dublin
International Airport. Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport
are both fairly close.
