Geography of Cork

With over a thousand kilometres of coastline, the area around Cork boasts spectacular
scenery, as well as Ireland's highest mountain, Carrauntoohil. Cork city itself
is located on the Lee River, near the mouth of Cork Harbour. The oldest part
of the city sits on an island between the north and south branched of the Lee,
which is traversed by numerous bridges.
Cork has become the second largest city in Ireland, with a population of almost
200,000. It is also the focal point of County Cork, the largest of Ireland's
32 counties with a land area of 2,880 square miles. County Cork makes up much
of the southern coast of Ireland with a long coastline, many clean beaches,
steep cliffs, making this county a prime maritime area.
The city's close proximity to the touristy county of Kerry, as well as the
beaches and seaside towns of the 'Sunny Southeast' make it a popular base. The
country is pleasantly rural with rolling hills and clusters of forest.
