What to see by foot: Cork

Cork city can easily be navigated on foot, with most of the sights and eateries
within walking distance.
There are two churches that are worth visiting in Cork. First, is the Shandon
Church (St. Ann's Church) which was built in 1722 in the place of an old church
that was destroyed in 1690. The visit to this Protestant church should not be
missed, especially the tiresome climb up its steeple. At the top, you will have
a spectacular panorama of the city. Second is St. Finbarr's Cathedral (on Dean
Street) which was built in French Gothic style in 1865. It was built on the
spot of the vault of the founder of the city of Cork and boasts some spectacular
architecture.
Other visitor's highlights are: The Cork Museum, set up in an old brewery,
which illustrates the tumultuous history of the city, and Cork city Goal, which
has been restored to its former grizzly glory and tells the visitor what life
was like there for prisoners in the 19th century.
For some unique shopping, visit the Butter Exchange. It is a small centre for
artisans, where you will be able to find jewellery, knitting garments, pottery
items, and porcelain. The exchange gets it name from the export and trade of
salted butter that took place here in the 18th century.
St. Patrick's Street is the commercial downtown area of Cork, the heat of the
city, lined with old houses. It is a fun area to browse and this covered walkway
eventually leads to St. Patrick's Bridge.
