What to see by car: Cork

There many places to visit from Cork city, both near and far. Kinsale, which
lies 29kms south of Cork city, is a popular centre for yachting, sea angling
and gourmet eating. It also boasts the Charles Fort, which is a classic example
of a star-shaped fort, constructed in the 17th century. Explore North Cork towns
and villages, such as Mallow and Fermoy, which are dominated by the majestic
Blackwater River. The coastal towns of East Cork are also worth exploring. The
colourful towns and villages of West Cork have a unique atmosphere and are fun
to explore by foot. One particular gem is Cobh (pronounced: 'Cove'), which attracts
plenty of day trippers in the summer to experience its charm.
Blarney Castle, located just a few miles north west of Cork, is one of Ireland's
oldest and most historic castles. It was built around 1446, as an ancient stronghold
of the MacCarthys, Lords of Muskerry and one of the strongest fortresses in
Munster - its walls are eighteen feet thick in places! On the parapet of the
castle is the famous 'Blarney Stone'. According to local legend, after kissing
this stone, you will have the gift of eternal eloquence, or "the gift of
the gab". To kiss the stone, you must first lie on your back, then lean
your head backwards and downwards and kiss the underside of the stone. Having
done so you might pick up something nasty from the hordes of tourists who have
done so before you!
Arigideen Heritage Park was established in 1998 as a Tourism Enterprise on
a 135 acre dairy farm, which is located just off of the R600 between Clonakilty
and Timoleague in Southwest Cork. This is a unique way to experience the Irish
farm life.
The French Armada Centre is located in the town of Bantry. The centrepiece
of the exhibition is a giant 1:6 scale model of a frigate in cross section,
vividly illustrating life in the French Navy 200 years ago. It illustrates the
ship's construction and various activities as they happened on board.
