Historical interest: Cork
    
Cork, which comes from the Gaelic 'Corcaigh' meaning marsh, refers to the fact
that Cork city is built on water. The city centre is on an island in the River
Lee, just upstream from Cork Harbour and the river divides the city into distinct
north and south regions. Throughout its history, Cork has been an important
port and trade centre. Its rich history includes invasions by the Vikings and
Normans.
Tradition states that the city was founded in the late 6th or early 7th century
by St. Finbarr, who went there to kill the last dragon in Ireland and who built
a monastery on the current south side of the city. The city is often called
'Rebel Cork' because it was a centre of the 19th century Fenian movement and
played an active part in the Irish struggle for independence.
In the 9th century, the Danes occupied Cork and walled it. Dermot MacCarthy
ousted the Danes and in 1172 swore allegiance to Henry II of England. Oliver
Cromwell occupied Cork in 1649, and the Duke of Marlborough in 1690. Many public
buildings were destroyed in the nationalist disturbances of 1920, and the Sinn
Fein Lord Mayor was murdered by the British constabulary. Terence MacSwiney
succeeded him and died in jail in London after a hunger strike. On back of this
colourful history, Cork has become a metropolitan centre today that boasts many
places of historical interest in and around the city for the visitor.
Cork is one of the principal ports of Ireland, connecting Ireland with France
(Roscoff, Le Havre) and the United Kingdom (Swansea) and it was also the starting
point of many steamers heading for America until the 1960s. It is also from
here that 3 million Irish emigrated in the 19th century to the 'New World'.
