What to see by car: Dublin

Dublin has the advantage of having surprisingly rural and picturesque suburbs,
which are well worth some day trips. The coastal area boasts many quaint towns
and villages, which are just idyllic and a nice getaway from the city.
If you're interested in the legend of Guinness, then you might never get beyond
their famous Brewery, located in the southwest of the centre. Free beer is offered
at the end of the tour, in fact this institution has contributed generously
to the area for several hundred years.
The Phoenix Park, the largest urban park in Europe, lies just 3 km from Dublin's
city centre. The 704 hectar park is criss-crossed by a network of roads and
walkways, which are wonderful to stroll. The park contains Áras an Uachtaráin,
the Irish President's residence, the US ambassador's residence, as well as the
Dublin Zoo.
Just east of Dublin lies Dun Laoghaire, which began life as a small fishing
village and has since grown into a thriving seaport and seaside resort. The
town is dominated by two piers, the East Pier stretching 1,290 meters and the
West Pier 1,548 meters.
The National Maritime Museum, housed in the Mariner's Church, contains a French
ship's longboat captured in 1796, as well as other maritime paraphernalia.
One kilometre south of Dun Laoghaire lies Sandycove, the home of the James
Joyce Museum. The museum is housed in the Martello Tower, made famous in Joyce's
novel Ulysses.
Howth village, 15 kilometres north east of Dublin, began as a Viking settlement
and is now a major fishing and yachting centre. Just opposite the harbour is
the island of Ireland's Eye, an important bird sacnturary. Howth Castle was
once the home of the Norman noble Sir Almeric Tristram, who acquired it in 1177.
Ardgillan Castle, in Balbriggan, is an exquisitely restored 18th century castle/country
house that is breathtakingly located right on the edge of the Irish Sea. The
house was built in 1738 and contains some beautifully decorated period furnishings.
The Wicklow hills, south of Dublin, is another area of outstanding beauty,
and the picturesque lakeside village of Glendalough is delightful.
