Dublin celebrated its millennium, as a city, in 1988, but has been inhabited
for more than one thousand years. There is evidence that there were human settlements
in Dublin since mesolithic times. The city's Irish name, Baile Átha Cliath
- 'Town of the Hurdle Ford' - came from early Celtic settlers.
The arrival of the Vikings in the 10th century AD had a huge impact on the
city. This Viking settlement, known as 'Dyfflin' or 'Dubh Linn', grew to 5,000
by the middle of the 11th century. Anglo-Norman invasions began at the end of
the 12th century, with many of the Danes settling in the area and intermarrying
with the local people.
Population growth began in earnest in the 17th century. However, it was during
the next century that Dublin began growing into the city as it is known today.
The Georgian streets and buildings constructed by the Protestants helped Dublin
achieve the position as the British Empire's Second City.
With the Act of Union in 1800, however, Dublin lost its parliament, and difficult
times followed. These culminated in 1916 with the Easter Rising, where Irish
nationalists took over various buildings in Dublin, including the General Post
Office. Many buildings were destroyed during the uprising, and during the Civil
War which followed.
Ireland became the centre of government in an independent republic in 1949,
when the Irish Free State left the British Commonwealth and became the Republic
of Ireland. From the 1950s onwards many of the fine town houses fell into disrepair
or were just torn down to make room for ugly concrete structures or mass housing.
But Dublin has come a long way since then and much of the city has be redeveloped
or revitalised. Today, Dublin has regained its status as a European capital.
