Mini guide to Londonderry
The city with two names, Londonderry or Derry, has long been at the centre
of controversial events in Northern Ireland. But now with the troubles fading
into memory its historic centre and vibrant entertainment centre have much to
offer the visitor.
Visitors to the city should visit the Cathedral of St. Columb built by Protestant
settlers in 1633, it was the first cathedral constructed in Europe after the
Reformation. Its museum contains the four original keys to the city's gates.
Also go and see the high-tech, multi-media, Fifth Province exhibition which
takes visitors on an interactive journey through Irish mythology. Also, the
award-winning Tower Museum presents the city's history and includes items salvaged
from the Spanish Armada, ravaged by storms off the Irish coast in 1588.
To appreciate the city's history and architecture a walking tour of the Derry's
walls is a must. The 17th-century walls, about a mile in circumference and 5.4m
(18 ft.) thick were the focus of attacks (including sieges in 1641, 1649, and
1689) but they withstood many tests of time and remain unbroken. They make Derry
one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe.
Food lovers should sample the fine seafood available in the many restaurants
or eat traditional roasts in a bar. Entertainment options typically focus on
the lively pub scene, with Waterloo Street containing the most lively and traditional
venues. Shoppers should head to Derry Craft Village with its retail shops and
workshops.
Excursions from the city include the Georgian enclave of Limavady, where 'Danny
Boy' was composed. It is also a perfect spot for exploring Ireland's north-west
corner, with the Giant's Causeway and Glenveagh National Park in Donegal all
within an hour's drive.
City of Derry Airport is serviced by British Airways from Glasgow and Manchester,
and by Ryanair from London Stansted. Northern Ireland Railways operate frequent
trains from Belfast and Portrush. By bus, the no. 212 Maiden City Flyer, operated
by Ulsterbus takes a little over 90 minutes.
