Mini guide to Portrush
Set on a peninsular on Northern Ireland's north coast, Portrush is known for its
superb beaches, coastal walks and excellent facilities for families. Portrush
has a commendable history and is the perfect base for visiting the nearby Giants
Causeway headland.
The star attraction here are Portrush's beaches, which are magnificent and
offer ideal bathing conditions, while a depression between the nearby White
Rocks and Royal Portrush Golf Course is believed to be the spot where the King
of Norway was killed in 1103 by Irish forces.
The town of Portrush has an array of activities including: Fantasyland, an
indoor play area; Waterworld, with its pools and flumes; the Dunluce Family
Entertainment Centre; and the Portrush Countryside Centre. A walk from Curran
Strand on the seafront takes you to White Rocks and onto Dunluce Castle.
Another good amusement destination for all the family is Barry's Amusements,
while the Royal Portrush Golf Course and various scenic walks provide other
alternatives. Portrush has a wide range of accommodation options as well as
a good selection of restaurants, cafés and bars.
The Giants Causeway are the biggest attraction near Portrush and are only a
10-minute drive away at Causeway Head to the east, while the Antrim Mountains
to the southeast are a favourite among walkers and Ballymena is known for its
shopping.
Portrush is a little over an hour's drive from Belfast via the M2 motorway,
A-26 and A-29 highways and train connections run from Belfast to Portrush throughout
the day. Bus Eirann has three departures per day from Belfast Central to Portrush
and several per day from Dublin Airport, while Belfast International Airport
is the nearest air terminal.
