Mini guide to Waterford
When most people think of the verdant green landscapes of Ireland, they imagine
somewhere like Waterford, situated in the southeast of the country and surrounded
by lush river valleys and a dramatic coastline. Waterford is also famous for its
crystal, and there are also plenty of opportunities for playing golf, cycling,
walking and horseback riding. The beaches are extremely clean here, and it is
also an ideal spot for anglers.
The city was established in the days of the Vikings and has a noticeable medieval
feel to it. There are intriguing narrow alleyways leading off the main streets,
and a constant hum of activity at the port.
There are several churches, museums and other centres that are worth visiting
in town, as well as a few remains of the old city walls, built by the Vikings
over 1,000 years ago. Two cathedrals in particular stand out for their architectural
merits - Christchurch and Holy Trinity.
Other attractions include: the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre, Waterford
Treasures at the Granary, the Lismore Heritage Centre and the Tipperary South
Riding County Museum. There are also a couple of towers that are very ancient,
including the Watch Tower near Railway Square, and the Half Moon Tower on Patrick
Street.
The city's most famous product, crystal glass, can be seen at the Waterford
Crystal Glass Factory, which welcomes visitors for tours of the production area.
Apart from regular hotels and bed-and-breakfasts, accommodation options include
castle hotels and caravan parks. There is plenty of choice when it comes to
eating as well, with fish being the local speciality, though there are vegetarian
restaurants too.
There is a good road system connecting Waterford with other important towns
in Ireland like Cork, Wexford and Dublin. If you don't have your own car, you
can travel around on local Bus Eireann services. The train is another option,
with connections to Dublin, Rosslare and Limerick. The nearest airports are
at Cork and Dublin.
