Travelling to Bologna

The roads in the region are a pleasure to drive on: the network in the north
is particularly well maintained, making driving even easier. You probably won't
ever be stuck in a traffic jam and some of the scenery, when travelling through
Tuscany, is breathtaking.
If travelling by car, you can reach Bologna on the A1 Autostrada del Sole,
which also links Milan, Florence and Rome. The A13 heads directly for Ferrara,
Padova and Venezia; the A14 for Rimini and Ravenna; and the Via Emilia (S9)
goes on to connect Milan with the Adriatic coast.
The famous Eurostar trains run from Venice, Florence, Sam Marino and Milan,
all of which are several hours away from Bologna. Rome is a little over five
hours away, but the trains are fast, efficient and comfortable. Travel by rail
is good value, with several classes and speeds to choose from.
Ravenna, Ferrara and Modena have regular bus services to Bologna; the buses
leave from the depot opposite Piazza XX Settembre, just around the corner from
the train station. Many European cities have non-stop services that run directly
to Bologna.
Bologna has an international airport, Guglielmo Marconi, which receives flights
from many European cities; but visitors from farther afield will probably arrive
at Milan's Malpensa airport. From there, Bologna is a three-hour train ride.
