Geography of Bologna

Bologna is situated 52kms south of Ferrara, 151kms southwest of Venice and
378kms north of Rome. It lies in the northern reaches of central Italy, the
region of Emilia-Romagna, which is also home to Modena and Parma and the Renaissance
dukes of Ferrara who, in their power, influenced some of Italy's great poets
and painters.
Bologna stands at the crossroads between Venice and Florence and is linked
by highways to Milan and Tuscany. It is an excellent place from which to explore
the rest of the region. From Bologna, it's 16kms to Ferrara; 50kms southeast
to the ceramic town of Faenza; and 18kms northwest to Parma. It is also just
13kms northwest to Modena, with its Romanesque cathedral. Ravenna, with its
fabulous mosaics, is situated 74kms east of Bologna on the Adriatic Sea.
Follow the Via Emilia, which starts at Rimini and goes through to Piacenza.
This ancient land is rich in architecture, including Parma's cathedral and baptistery,
as well as scenic beauty. Emilia is one of Italy's great farming districts and
is thought to be a quintessential stop for culinary cadres looking for superlative
wines and dishes.
