What to see by foot: Bologna

Bologna is definitely pedestrian friendly and, when you consider some of Italy's
busier cities, it's a blessing to walk here. The sweeping Piazza Maggiore and
adjoining Piazza del Nettuno form the centre of the old town. Here you'll find
impressive medieval and Renaissance buildings. The hectic Fontana del Nettuno,
which was sculptured in the mid-1500s, is a well known meeting point.
In the old city, you'll also find The Palazzo Comunale (town hall); Basilica
di San Petronio (an enormous cathedral built in 1392); and the Basilica di Santo
Stefano, which is actually a collection of chapels, one of which was consecrated
in the 5th century.
Less famous than the tower in Pisa, but equally as endearing, are the leaning
towers of Torres degli Asinelli (Tower of the Asinelli) and the Torres degli
Garisenda (Tower of the Garisenda). The former is climbable and offers good
views of the city, if you're brave enough!
The university in Bologna is not only the oldest but arguably one of the most
prestigious. The University Quarter has become the entertainment precinct of
the city, with an abundance of bars and restaurants along the Via Zamboni. Here
you'll also find the Pinacoteca Nazionale (National Picture Gallery) and Oratorio
di Santa Cecilia with its remarkable frescoes.
