What to see by car: Bologna

Travelling by car from Bologna, there is an abundance of interesting places
to explore. Search out some of Italy's magisterial edifices or alternatively
try the much lauded cuisine.
Not far from Bologna's city centre is the Basilica Santuario della Madonna
di San Luca. This 18th century Basilica is famously connected to the city walls
by a lovely portico. If you feel like driving farther afield, head to the tiny
resort town of Porretta (Terme). Situated among the Apennine Mountains, about
50kms south of Bologna, it's famous for its hot springs and the annual Soul
Music Festival.
Modena is another nearby historic city; but has recently become extremely prosperous
on the strength of its lucrative motor industry, hosting famous names such Ferrari,
Maserati and Lamborghini. The cathedral here has some 12th century bas-reliefs
which are a must-see. Modena is also home to Italy's Bibliotheca Estense, custodian
of many of the country's most important books and manuscripts.
It's hardly a trip to this great country without visiting the mighty city of
Florence. Spend a day or more touring its massive Duomo, Baptistry, Florentine-art-laden
Uffizi Gallery and famous Ponte Vecchio.
Venice, known throughout the world, is one of the most unique and awe-inspiring
cities in Italy, largely due to its many canals, Piazza San Marco, St Mark's
Basilica and quirky atmospheric nature.
