Mini guide to Fasano
Situated near Italy's heel, the resort town of Fasano has many sights and activities
to entice visitors. The resort and its surrounding area contain a wealth of archaeological
treasures, combined with enticing beaches and pristine countryside.
Highlights of Fasano include the vast Safari Zoo, which is home to about 500
animals, including: lions, giraffes, Himalayan bears, llamas, buffalos and monkeys.
Fasano is also known for its modern resort area, which is equipped with first
class hotels and restaurants, athletic facilities, amusements and entertainments,
and above all, wide sandy golden beaches.
Walk along the fabulous Valle d'Itria, which extends between Locorotondo and
Martina Franca, to witness an unforgettable vision of rustic beauty and to experience
a feeling of calm and serenity. This part of Italy is awash with pine, oak and
ilex forests, making it very popular with hikers and those seeking to escape
the cities.
The folklore traditions of Fasano are entrenched and respected by the townsfolk
and culminate in a huge folklore festival every winter. Consequently, many of
the bars feature traditional folk music as part of their entertainment. Shopping
goods range from tourist trinkets to Italian designer clothes and brands, and
food veers from rustic farm produce to seafood.
Not far from Fasano is the town of Cisternino, with its characteristic ancient
streets and popular Puglian architecture typified in the houses of the old city.
Also close by is Savelletri, a little fishing hamlet, graced by intimate beaches.
Nearby Torre Canne is a town known for its complex of hot springs, famous for
their therapeutic value.
To get to Fasano by car from Naples, take the autostrada as far as the Bari-Lecce
highway which then connects to a network of roads linking all the cities and
towns of the Puglia region. By rail from Naples, take the train destined for
Bari-Brindisi-Lecce; it stops at Fasano on the way. The nearest airports are
at Bari and Brindisi. By sea, you can take the regular ferries, which depart
daily from Greece and Yugoslavia, to nearby Brindisi.
