Florence is one of the most charming cities in the world. Its palaces, churches
and museums overflow with masterful paintings and sculpture. As the birthplace
of the Renaissance, the city combines unparalleled beauty with centuries of
history. One of the most famous sights in Florence is the Duomo (Cathedral of
Santa Maria del Fiore), visible from almost anywhere in this historical city.
Other famous sights include: the Uffizi Gallery; Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
(with the original door panels of the Baptistery); Palatine Gallery and Royal
Apartments in the Pitti Palace; and the Ponte Vecchio and the Vasari Corridor
above it. The Galleria dell'Accademia, which houses the statue of David and
Michelangelo's other sculptures, should not be missed. Alternatively, the church
of San Miniato al Monte with its splendid view from the Piazzale Michelangelo;
Bargello (with works by Cellini, Donatello and Michelangelo); and the tomb sculptures
by Michelangelo at the Medici Chapels are also worth seeing.
By car you can explore the Medici villas, the delightful towns of Lucca, Prato,
Pistoia and Fiesole and even go as far as Pisa to visit its famous leaning tower.
In central Italy, Florence is the capital of Tuscany and is situated on the
Arno River at the foot of the Apennines. May and September are the ideal times
to visit; the worst times are the week before Easter and Easter itself, and
from June until the first week of September when Florence is literally overrun
by local and foreign visitors.
Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance, an amazing outburst of activity
from the 14th - 16th centuries that completely changed this Tuscan town and
the world. Under the Medicis, Florence blossomed into an unrivalled repository
of art and architectural treasures by creative geniuses such as Botticelli,
Brunelleschi, Cellini, Donatello, Fra Angelico, Ghiberti, Giotto, Leonardo,
Michelangelo and Raphael.
