Travelling to Florence

Travelling by car is the best way to see Italy; and Tuscany is one of the country's prettiest regions. The road network is excellent and you can take the A1 from Bologna and Milan in the north or from Rome and Naples in the south. Local roads provide access to the lovely west coast as well as to Venice in the northeast.

Rail is a popular way to reach Florence, with direct service to and from Milan, Venice, Trieste, Verona, Bologna and Pisa. Italian trains are fast (if you catch the right class), reliable and comfortable; they are also relatively inexpensive.

There are two bus stations in Florence. Buses leaving and arriving at Lazzi station travel all over Italy and to many European cities, while the SITA local station services many smaller destinations throughout Tuscany, such as Siena, Arezzo and Castellina.

Florence has two airports: Galileo Galilei is nearer Pisa and services international flights from London, Paris, Munich and major Italian cities; while Amerigo Vespucci is closer to the city and services domestic flights. Both have regular shuttle connections to Florence.

Getting around Florence has become a lot easier since the city centre was closed to all but residential traffic Florence can be a driver's nightmare, with its tiny, narrow streets perennially clogged with bicycles, mopeds and dumpsters. Because the areas of most interest to visitors are all within a pleasant walk from one another, the important sights are best reached on foot. Those few attractions not easily reached on foot are on main public bus routes. Taxis are a costly option.
