Geography of Florence

Florence, capital of Tuscany in central Italy, is situated on the Arno River
at the foot of the Apennines. The city is the jewel of the Italian Renaissance
and is one of the world's great historical cities. It is also a commercial,
industrial and tourist centre.
Florence is nestled in the very centre of Tuscany - a region of rolling hills,
stately cypress trees, ancient olive groves and endless vineyards. An ancient
medieval city, famous worldwide for its museums and art galleries, Florence
is also the ideal city from which to explore the rest of Tuscany.
Tuscany itself extends east from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the
Apennines and south from the Ligurian gulf to the gentle hills of the Maremma;
however, its heart is in the central hills of Chianti, a region famous for its
wine.
Summers in Florence are hot, with July bearing the most intense heat. Temperatures
can easily surpass 38 C, but 32 - 34 C is more the average. Rain tends to be
infrequent but heavy and most common in February and March and in autumn. Although
winter temperatures are not very low, dampness makes the cold very penetrating.
Winter temperatures can drop two or three degrees below freezing at night and
will warm up to 8 - 10 C during the day. Snow is rare.
