What to see by car: Florence

Florence and the surrounding areas are best seen by car. A good view of Florence
can be captured from the hill beside the Forte di Belvedere. You can also find
spectacular sights by driving northeast to the hill village of Fiesole and to
the nearest of the various Medici villas - originally awe-inspiring country
retreats but now absorbed into Florence's ever-expanding suburbia.
Thirty minutes to the northwest, near Lucca, lie the neighbouring towns of
Prato and Pistoia, both bursting with art and historic architecture. These towns
are charming enough to both serve as delightful daytrips.
Travelling west to Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower; there are worthwhile
diversions to Vinci (Leonardo's birthplace) and the hilltop town of San Miniato
which gazes down over the valleys below.
Finally, to the south towards Siena lie the world renowned hills and vineyards
of Chianti, Italy's premier wine region. If you have a deeper thirst for wine,
other key areas are: Montalcino, Monepulciano, Bolgheri and the Maremma, all
located a few hours away.
The lush Italian province of Tuscany offers so much beauty and diversity that
one is bound to return time after time.
