What to see by foot: Lake Garda
With its Roman ruins and 12th century castles, Lake Garda is in a spectacular
setting with some wonderful quaint old villages, all easily explored on foot.
Gardone is just north of Salo on the western shore of the lake and is a very
small and rather charming place. The main sight is the Vittoriale, the house
of Gabriele D'Anniunzio, an Italian writer, and is filled to the brim with all
sorts of weird and wonderful things. The entrance fee includes a guided tour
and entrance to the gardens, where you will find an anti-submarine boat and
parts of another large warship.
Worth a special mention is the Riviera degli Olivi, the long golden shore running
along the eastern edge for 50 kilometres. Near the south of this shore is the
small, picturesque town of Lazise which was once the most important post of
the Venetians. The main attractions include: the city walls, with colourful
frescoes and intricately carved statues imbedded in the sides; The Scaliger
Castle; and the Venetian Customhouse. Today, the castle is privately owned and
linked with the old customs house, and they make an attractive setting in the
corner of the lake.
Just south of Lazise is the pretty little town of Peschiera, which affords
a spectacular view over the bay and the nearby hills from its magnificent city
walls. In town, a visit to the church of San Martino (dating from the 18th century)
should be coincided with one to the small historical museum.
