Hotels Lake Garda
What to see by car: Lake Garda
Lake Garda is bursting with scenic beauty and also has some equally remarkable
surroundings easily explored by car, including the enchanting cities of Verona
and Mantua, and the imposing peaks of the Dolomites.
About 25 kms southeast of the lake is the city of Verona which was, of course,
the setting for Shakespeare's plays: Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentleman
of Verona. As it should be, Verona is one of the most romantic cities in the
world, with its gorgeous setting surrounded by mountains and the River Adige;
you're reminded everywhere of the Shakespeare connection. The city - contains
magnificent Roman ruins as well as mellow medieval and Renaissance buildings.
If that isn't enough, the city is also full of music and its piazzas and streets
are particularly lively during the annual summer opera festival (held in July
and August) in the Roman arena.
South of Verona is the city of Mantua which still bears the mark of the flourishing
Renaissance period. The old historic city centre consists of small dusty medieval
streets that lead to the many piazzas, churches or palaces; the most renowned
palace being the Palazzo Ducale with its many rooms, numerous courtyards and
impressive frescoes. The city, bordered on three sides by the river Mincio,
is also better known as the city of the poet Virgil and the Renaissance painter
Mantegna, or as the setting for Verdi's 'Rigoletto'.
To the east of the lake and north of Verona is Valpolicella, located in a stunning
setting with the Negrar, Marano, Fumane and other minor valleys. It offers boundless
panoramas and enchanting countryside with marvels of nature, descending from
the 1,500-metre heights of Corno d'Aquilio to soft rounded foothills and fertile
intensely-cultivated valley floors. Valpolicella offers excellent hospitality
and first class restaurants with local wines and cuisine, ranging from cheeses
to salami, as well as Verona's characteristic dishes.
