Mini guide to Milan

The fashion capital of one of the most fashionable countries in the world,
and Italy's financial centre, Milan (Milano) is famous for its shopping opportunities
and more. The city's residents pride themselves on Milan's reputation for style,
variety of food and lively atmosphere. However, the city also has a rich seem
of history and beauty, promoted over the years by its wealth.
Piazza del Duomo is the centre of Milan's activity and is watched over by a
magnificent 14th century cathedral, featuring one of the world's largest domes,
which includes a stunning gilded copper statue of the Madonna. Also in the piazza
and worth a visit is the Museo del Duomo. Milan's other major attraction is
Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper restored and safely on display in the refectory
of the Convento di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
By car you can explore Pavia and the Lake Maggiore area. Pavia is a quaint
town on the banks of the Ticino River, less than an hour from central Milan.
Also within driving distance are the culturally interesting city of Bologna,
the busy port of Genoa and the historically important centres of Turin and Brescia.
As the capital of Lombardy and of Milan province, with a population of about
1,334,171, Milan is situated in northern Italy at the heart of the Po basin.
Because of its strategic position in the Lombard plain at the intersection of
several major transportation routes, it has been an international commercial,
financial and industrial centre since the Middle Ages.
Milan's history is a story of wealth, intrigue and conflict. Fortunately, economic
revival has made it a prosperous city. Milan is different from all the artistic
cities dotted around Italy. It is the centre of economic activity in the country;
and Italy's stock exchange is based here. Milan's fame is also enhanced by its
role in the world of fashion, the presence of many industries, its high-tech
service sector and its cultural innovation.
Milan, sitting at a crossroads for air, road and rail, is one of the most convenient
destinations to get to in Italy. The most popular means of travel into Milan
is rail: lines from Stazione Central in the city centre run to and from all
parts of Italy and Europe. Malpensa Airport handles almost all international
flights and is about 50kms northwest of the city.
