Travelling to Milan

Milan is one of the most convenient destinations to get to in Italy, situated
at a crossroads for air, road and rail, and even accessible by boat via Genoa.
If you're driving, you'll find it easy to get to Milan. Many of Italy's main
motorways converge at Milan's ring road, known as the Tangenziale Est and Tangenziale
Ovest. Prepare to deal with unexpected traffic on your way into and out of Milan
though, particularly on the busy A4 west to Torino - it runs east and west and
is the main route in and out of Milan.
Trains, arriving from Switzerland and France, and continuing south to the rest
of Italy, are a comfortable option. The rail network in Italy is punctual, well
organized, fast and relatively cheap, making it the preferable means of getting
to and from Genoa, Trieste, Venice, Florence and other nearby destinations.
Trains depart mainly from Stazione Central, but there are two other stations,
Nord and Porte Garibaldi.
Buses, affording spectacular scenery through the Alps, arrive directly from
many European cities. The main points of entry are the Mont Blanc tunnel from
France at Chamonix, the Grand St Bernard tunnel from Switzerland and the Brenner
Pass from Austria. From the west there is also a route to Nice and the Cote
d'Azur.
Malpensa Airport handles almost all international flights. It's about 50kms
northwest of the city and is a popular stopover en-route to the Middle East
and Asia. Most domestic and some European flights use Linate Airport, about
7kms east of the city centre. Public transportation links both airports to the
city centre, and is frequent and reliable.
Central Milan is quite small and most of it can be covered easily on foot;
but Milan's extensive transportation system is also a convenient way to get
from place to place. Trams are easy and inexpensive; and the heavily travelled
subway system (or metro) is efficiently run, convenient and fast. Milan also
has an extensive bus system which shares a ticketing system with both the trams
and the metro. The metro operates 06:00 - 24:00, buses and trams operate from
06:00 to 01:00.
