Geography of Milan
    
Just south of the Alps in the northeast part of Italy is a very large and fertile
plain known as the Po River Valley. This area is the most densely populated
and one of the most important industrial and agricultural regions of Italy.
The Po River runs across the centre of this plain and has, over the years, created
a large delta on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Turin, Milan, and Genoa are
among the major cities located in the Po River Valley.
Milan is the capital of Lombardy and of Milan province in northern Italy, at
the heart of the Po basin. Due to its strategic position in the Lombard plain,
at the intersection of several major transportation routes, it has been an international
commercial, financial and industrial centre since the Middle Ages.
The second-largest Italian city in population (after Rome), Milan is also a
major centre of intellectual and artistic life. The city is predominantly modern
and surrounded by industrial suburbs. It has many tall apartment and office
buildings in the business district and extensive residential and industrial
sections. An underground railway was opened in 1964.
Milan's main sites and arteries radiate out from the massive baroque Duomo.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele leads northeast into the quadrilatero or fashion district.
Beyond La Scala, north of the Duomo, are the winding streets of the Brera section,
the traditional bohemian quarter. To the northwest, past Milan's most exclusive
residential district, is the imposing Renaissance Castello Sforzesco. Banks
cluster in the ancient financial district just west of the Duomo, and bookshops
and cafés can be found in the university quarter to the southeast.
Though Italy has a predominantly Mediterranean climate, Milan's winters can
be chilly, with lows below freezing point. Fortunately, the mountains shield
the city from the worst of the northern European winter. Summer can be hot and
muggy. In August, most of the city's residents head to the beaches to escape
the 30 C-plus heat.
