What to see by foot: Milan

Milan's main attractions are easily seen on foot. The principal square in Milan
is the Piazza del Duomo. At one end of the piazza stands the Duomo (cathedral),
a huge Gothic structure of white marble, begun in 1386 and variously added to
over the following 600 years. You can climb the stairs or take the elevator
to the roof for a panoramic view of the city.
To the southwest of the Piazza del Duomo is the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio (c.
386 AD); near the basilica is the 15th century church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Adjacent to the church is a former Dominican monastery in the refectory of which
is the famous fresco of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
At the north-eastern end of the lovely Via Dante, which intersects the Piazza
del Duomo, is the imposing Castello Sforzesco. Originally a military fortress,
it was completely remodelled by more comfort-minded Francesco Sforza. The new
and improved defences were designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The interior includes
several museums boasting some stunning sculptural works. If you've had your
fill of history and culture, the nearby Parco Sempione is one of Milan's loveliest
green areas and is a nice place to take a break.
Milan has an enviable opera and music scene, the centrepiece being the world
renowned Teatro alla Scala on the charming piazza of the same name. Practically
destroyed during WWII, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1946. The adjoining Museo
Teatrale alla Scala boasts such curiosities as Verdi's death mask. Alternatively,
the Galeria Vittorio Emanuele II, a filigree structure of steel and glass that
was the first indoor mall, should not be missed.
Milan's shopping boulevards, malls and markets are everywhere and attract hordes
of shopping tourists. Often called the least Italian of the country's cities,
Milan doesn't draw the numbers of tourists that tend to overrun Rome, Florence
and Venice. However, a stroll down its narrow downtown streets and trip to its
spacious suburban parks will have you thinking its blend of old and new is quite
appealing.
