Geography of Modena

The charming city of Modena lies 40kms northwest of Bologna, 403kms northwest
of Rome and 130kms north of Florence. The city has one of the largest networks
of cycling lanes in Italy; and there is 80kms within Modena itself.
Modena prides itself on being an environmentally-conscious city. In the provincial
capital alone there are 27 square metres of green area per inhabitant. There
are also magnificent parks in the Apennines, including: the park of the Alto
Apennine Modenese, the Sassi of Roccamalatina and the park of the River Secchia.
The city boasts the largest plant for the treatment and disposal of toxic industrial
waste in Europe. Local companies were among the first in Italy to be awarded
the International ISO 14001 certification for safeguarding the environment.
Modena is an industrial zone blessed with Italy's highest per capita income,
and it can seem as sleek as the sports cars it produces. This is partially because
of its 20th century renovations, the result of the city being largely rebuilt
following WWII bombings. These factors create a stark contrast to both the antiquity
and the poverty so noticeable in other regions.
