What to see by foot: Modena

Modena is nestled in the Po Valley and possesses many great art treasures evoking
its more glorious past. The city is home to automobile and racing giants Ferrari,
Maserati and De Tomaso. It is also known for producing Lambrusco wine and balsamic
vinegar. Additionally, Modena is also the hometown of famous opera star Luciano
Pavarotti.
The Cathedral is a main attraction here. Designed by the architect Lanfranco
and decorated by the sculptor Wiligelmo, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Cathedral's bell tower, known as the Ghirlandina, dominates the city.
Automobile fanatics can visit a showroom, the Galleria Ferrari, in Maranello,
a suburb of Modena. The showroom displays engines, trophies, and both antique
as well as the latest Ferrari cars.
Other sights include: the Galleria Estense with its vast collection of paintings
and sculptures; and the Palazzo Ducale, built by Francesco I of Este and for
over a century headquarters of the Military Academy; the summer residence of
the Estensi in Sassuolo; and the Renaissance-style Piazza Martiri in Carpi.
Additionally, the medieval abbey at Nonantola, which houses the famous 'Charta'
of Charlemagne, is worth seeing.
For the sports minded, the city is home to 10 swimming pools, 3 sports stadiums,
a football stadium a baseball stadium, a racecourse, a shooting range and 36
centres with mixed sport facilities. In winter, ski resorts in the Apennines
offer more than 100kms of ski slopes served by 27 ski lifts. During the summer
golf enthusiasts can play on the 18-hole golf course, while cyclists can enjoy
the 80kms of bicycle trails.
Theatre culture is extremely important in this area, with productions of opera,
ballet, music, drama, dialect theatre, comedy and children's theatre offered
to the public.
Attractive and welcoming, Modena's city centre is dotted with many shop windows
of merchants and artisans exhibiting a broad range of quality merchandise. Balsamic
vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, zampone and cotechino, Modena ham, tortellini,
and Lambrusco are a few of the delicacies of Modena's native cuisine.
