Mini guide to Naples

Naples displays a distinctive character of old, southern Italy, where chaos
is still the order on the streets and Mafioso families lurk behind the scenes,
imposing a heavy influence. Of course tourists see a different face - endless
rows of washing shade Naples' narrow streets, which are filled with bustling
street markets, ancient churches, elegant galleries and museums. The plethora
of cafés, bars and restaurants makes it one of Italy's most interesting
destinations.
Situated on the Gulf of Naples close to Mount Vesuvius, Naples enjoys one of
the most attractive scenic settings in the Mediterranean. A fault line runs
just south of Naples to Sicily and, as a result, southern Italy has several
active volcanoes, including: Vesuvius, Stromboli, Vulcano and Mount Etna, as
well as many extinct volcanoes which form majestic mountain peaks.
For those interested in historical architecture, a major attraction is the
800-year-old Duomo situated close to the central piazza. Opposite is the beautiful
baroque church Chiesa dei Girolamini. Similarly, don't miss the Chiesa del Gesu
Nuovo on the lively piazza of the same name, as well as the magnificent Palazzo
Reale.
By car you can visit the lovely Amalfi coast and the infamous ruins of Pompeii,
as well as the quaint villages in the hinterland.
Naples is a very old city, having been established as a Greek trading centre
around 600 BC. The city was later conquered by the ancient Romans and became
a residence of several emperors and other important persons of that time.
Naples can be reached by car via the major north-south Autostrada del Sol,
numbered A1 (north to Rome and Milan) and A4 (south to Salerno and Reggio di
Calabria). Naples is the hub of the southern Italian train network and many
of Italy's southbound trains terminate there. Capodichino Airport is 8kms northeast
of the city centre, and serves all of southern Italy, with limited long haul
flights and regular flights to all major European centres.
