Geography of Naples

Naples is located in the southern part of Italy in the region of Campania and
is the third most populated city in Italy, with over one million inhabitants.
The city sits on the northern edge of one of the most beautiful bays in Italy
- the Bay of Naples.
Much of the area of southern Italy, which consists of the regions of Naples,
Abruzzi, Basilicata, Campania, Puglia, Calabria and Sicily, is either rugged
with hilly terrain or heavily forested with some plains and numerous mountain
plateaus created by volcanic activity.
Campania faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and includes one of the finest coastlines
in Italy. The hinterland is essentially mountainous, with irregular mountain
masses occasionally broken here and there by valleys and plains. In front of
the gulfs of Naples and Salerno, you can admire the marvellous and enchanting
islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida.
A fault line runs just south of Naples to Sicily and, as a result, southern
Italy has several active volcanoes, including: Vesuvius, Stromboli, Vulcano
and Mount Etna, as well as many extinct volcanoes forming majestic mountain
peaks. This area is also susceptible to earthquakes, although most are relatively
minor.
Today two million people live in the immediate vicinity of Mount Vesuvius.
The mountain has erupted more than 50 times since the eruption in 79 AD which
buried Pompeii and its sister city, Herculaneum.
After Pompeii was buried and its inhabitants lost to history, the volcano continued
to erupt every 100 years until about 1037 AD, when it entered a 600-year period
of serenity. In 1631, the volcano killed an additional 4,000 area residents.
It was during the restoration after this eruption that workers discovered the
ruins of Pompeii, buried and forgotten for nearly 1,600 years.
