What to see by foot: Naples

Naples is a bustling city located in a beautiful natural setting, with a colourful
street life, chaotic traffic and numerous narrow and winding alleyways that
lead to many quaint shops and restaurants. There is much to see and do in Naples
and the surrounding areas.
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples should be your first stop. It
houses one of the world's greatest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities,
as well as many priceless artefacts retrieved from the nearby ruins of Pompeii
and other archaeological sites located in southern Italy. The collection includes
ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, a famous mosaic of Alexander the Great and
a collection of ancient coins, medals, cameos, silverware and jewellery. A detailed
model of Pompeii is also on display.
The beautifully located Castel Sant 'Elmo cannot be missed; it offers spectacular
views out over the bay and the city itself. Farther along, the 13th century
Castel Nuovo overlooks the ferry port and Norman castle, and is surrounded by
the tiny fishing village Borgo Marinaro. The 18th century Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte
has an excellent collection of Renaissance art.
For a relaxing afternoon, you can stroll in the Via Floridiana, a lush public
park spilling down from the Vomero to Mergelina and take in Italy's oldest opera
house, the Teatro San Carlo in the charming Piazza Trento e Trieste.
Neapolitan cuisine is famous worldwide, and there is no shortage of quality
restaurants catering to all budgets. Although pizza and pasta are the culinary
staples of Neapolitan cuisine, the area is also known for its fine cheeses (including
the famous mozzarella), its tasty fish and seafood dishes, and its delicious
ice cream and pastries.
Naples offers some of the finest shopping in Italy, with hundreds of small
artisan shops offering authentic handmade gift and souvenir items. These include
the shops owned by jewellers, silver crafters, stone carvers, engravers, ceramicists
and glove makers. The areas of Via Toledo and Via Chiaia are dotted with fashionable
boutiques where high quality clothing and accessories can be found.
