What to see by car: Padova
    
Padova is an excellent base from which to see the plethora of sights in the region.
Near Padova, at the foot of the Euganei hills, are the towns of Abano and Montegrotto
which are famous for their thermal waters and hot springs.
To the east is Mira, a town famous for footwear. Along the coast is Chioggia,
an important fishing centre. Additionally, Vicenza is just 20 minutes from Padova
by train and is a living museum of Palladio, who was an influential architect.
Venice, just 30 minutes from Padova, attracts millions of tourists from all
over the world with its beauty and art treasures. A gondola ride along the lovely
canals is a must.
Along the coast to the north are the towns of Jesolo, Caorle, Bibione, Lignano,
Grado and Trieste, which are also seaside resorts. The central zone is partly
flat, with hills to the north.
For a dose of Roman remains, Verona is your place. The city is the setting
for Shakespeare's plays Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentleman of Verona. Verona
is home to the 14th century Castelvecchio, which has displays of Venetian painters
and works of gold. The medieval and Renaissance Piazza dei Signori, the Piazza
delle Erbe and the 12th century Church of San Zeno Maggiore are also worth visiting.
Also worth visiting are the town of Marostica with its medieval castle and
famous 'live' chess matches in medieval dress; and Bassano, the starting point
for climbing Mount Grappa, a battlefield during WWI.
Treviso is known for its fine medieval old quarter and for its friendly lifestyle.
The province is noted for farm products (especially red chicory) and manufacturing
(mechanical items, clothing and furniture). Busy towns there are Conegliano
and Montebelluna for sport footwear. Farther east is the old town of Oderzo
and the medieval Portogruaro, producers of fine red and white wines.
Lamon, the land of the beans, is situated on the road to the tourist resorts
of Fiera di Primiero e S. Martino di Castrozza in the nearby Trentino Dolomites.
Nearby, on the top of Mount Avena, were discovered remains of Neanderthal man.
