Mini guide to Palermo

The stunningly attractive Sicilian city of Palermo is situated on its own bay
at the foot of the towering Monte Pellegrino. It captivates visitors with its
spectacular scenery, convenient location and superb architectural heritage, making
it Sicily's most popular tourist destination. Being the island's main tourist
town, Palermo has ample first-class accommodation and dozens of quality restaurants.
The nightlife is vibrant and fast-paced, with a variety of cafés, bars,
pubs and clubs catering to all tastes.
Spend a pleasant morning or afternoon wandering the maze of narrow streets
and lanes of the old town centre. For more relaxation and recreation, head for
the beautiful Mondello beach or climb to the top of Monte Pellegrino for some
incredible panoramas of the coastline and hinterland.
Drive out to the slopes of Mount Caputo, about 6.4kms outside Palermo, where
you will find Monreale. This town is most famous for its magnificent cathedral,
which is a Romanesque structure with a mixture of Arab, Byzantine, and Norman
artistic styles. Externally, the structure is not particularly impressive, but
inside you'll be greeted with over 6,340 square metres of mosaics - one of the
world's largest displays of mosaics.
Palermo extends on a fertile plain called the Conca d'Oro (Golden Horn), along
a bay between the Pellegrino Mount and Capo Zafferano. The latter is a headland
separating Palermo's bay from that of Termini Imerese. The climate here is typically
Mediterranean, with hot but not torrid summers, short mild winters, and moderate
rainfall from October to March.
The highlights of Palermo's historic buildings are: the magnificent cathedral;
the ornate Royal Palace and Cappella Palatina Chapel; the Arabic-Norman churches
of La Martorana and San Giovanni degli Eremeti; and the contrasting Baroque
churches of San Giuseppe dei Teatini and Santa Caterina. A common feature of
all the buildings is their exquisite mosaic work, which alone is reason to visit
this amazing city.
Palermo can be reached via connections from Rome International Airport, and
transportation options into the city are numerous and reliable. There are also
charter flights from European cities.
