What to see by car: Piacenza
Piacenza is extremely fortunate in being situated in an area where some of the
world's top attractions are located. The sights are best seen by car and top destinations
include: Milan, a shopper's paradise for fashion, located to the north; Verona,
the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, located to the northeast; and
the holiday resort of Rimini, which lies on the Adriatic coast.
Powerhouse of Italy, trend-setting shopping capital, and scene of Europe's
most important modern furniture fair, Milan (Milano) has much to offer visitors.
It boasts a wide range of important art galleries, museums and churches. La
Scala opera house is world famous.
Highlights of the city include: an extravagantly pinnacled Duomo; the Brera
Gallery, containing works by Italian artists of the 14th to 20th centuries;
and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, with works by Leonardo de Vinci, Caravaggio and
Raphael. In addition, Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper dominates the Dominican
monastery refectory, next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The city of Romeo and Juliet is best known for the Arena, a magnificently preserved
Roman amphitheatre, scene of an annual festival of opera and ballet. Roman artefacts
are housed in the Archaeological Museum, and the 19th century San Pietro Castle
is also worth visiting.
The Romanesque church of Santa Maria Antica houses the Arche Scaligere, the
tombs of the ancient ruling family; while the Castelvecchio Museum contains
weapons, jewellery and some notable religious paintings. The Church of San Zeno
Maggiore is another handsome example of the Romanesque style; while Gothic Sant'Anastasia
contains Pisanello's painting Saint George and the Princess.
Rimini, heart of the Adriatic Riviera, is the main resort town for beaches
that stretch from Viserbella in the north through Viserba, Rivabella, Marina
Centro and Bellariva to Miramare. Visitors arrive in their droves for sun, sea
and beach, supported by amusement arcades, gift shops, and restaurants. Other
attractions in the town include the Municipal Museum and the 15th century Tempio
Malatestiano.
