Mini guide to Pisa

One of the premier tourist destinations in Italy, the town of Pisa boasts the
world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, along with several other architectural treasures.
The city is also conveniently located near some of the most untouched countryside
in Italy, and is close to the famed Tuscan coast.
For most visitors the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the highlight of the town. Begun
in 1173 AD, the tower was finally completed in 1350 AD and has always tilted
to some degree. The Tower has been in danger of collapsing several times and
the latest effort to reverse the tilting was completed in 2000. The tower is
circular and consists of six storeys crowned by a bell chamber. If permitted,
the 293-stair climb to the top of the tower is well worth the effort for the
stunning views of Pisa and the surrounding countryside.
For more stunning architecture, travel to the nearby fortified town of Lucca,
which boasts several magnificent Romanesque churches. Those who have had their
fill of old buildings can head for the superb Tuscan beaches of the Maremma
region, or take a boat out to the scenic islands of Elba, Giglio and Capraia.
Pisa is the capital of Pisa Province in Tuscany. It's located on the Arno River
near the Ligurian Sea; and is a rail and road junction as well as a tourist
and industrial centre. The prosperous economic region of Tuscany is mostly hilly
and mountainous, boasting much fertile soil, especially in the Arno River valley
and in the Maremma (a coastal strip).
In the 12th century Pisa was a wealthy city and was already busy building monuments
to its achievements. Berta di Bernardo left 60 coins in her will for the purchase
of stone to build a bell tower in 1172; this tower would later become the famed
Leaning Tower.
If you're driving to Pisa, there's a Florence-Pisa autostrada along the Arno
valley. The city can also be reached via rail connections from Rome or Milan,
both of which have busy international airports. Tuscany's main international
airport, Galileo Galilei, is just 3kms south of Pisa.
