What to see by foot: Pisa

Pisa's most famous sights are easily explored on foot. The city's most famous
attraction, the Leaning Tower, forms part of the set of three architectural
wonders of Pisa: the Tower, the Duomo and the Baptistery. All are reached through
the imposing bronze doors of the Portale di San Ranieri.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa has become renowned the world over for its peculiar
inclination, but even without its famous fault the Leaning Tower would still
be one of most remarkable architectural structures in Europe. Although the original
architect (whose identity remains a mystery) designed the tower to be vertical,
a lean was first detected very early into the construction. Nonetheless, it
has so far survived over eight centuries and procedures were recently completed
to preserve the tower for future generations.
Nearby, the magnificent 12th century Duomo with its grey marble and white stone
colonnades is impressive. The intriguing mix of Romanesque and Gothic Baptistery,
with its spectacular design and simple unadorned majesty, also should not be
missed.
Elsewhere in Pisa are the fascinating museums of Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
and Museo delle Sinopie. Also, the Camposanto cemetery, with its picturesque
ramparts and medieval Torre di Santa Maria, offers a tranquil escape from the
crowds.
Pisa abounds with quality accommodation and excellent restaurants. The nightlife
scene is varied, with quiet cafés and bars as well as vibrant pubs and
clubs.
