Pisa is - an excellent location from which to explore the rest of the region. About 20kms or so east of Pisa, just outside the town of Calci, lies the largest and most interesting Carthusian monastery in Italy, the Certosa di Calci. It was founded in 1366, but most of its current façade dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. You can take a guided tour through this large complex of baroque frescoed chapels and cloisters. On display are 11 chapels, the main church and a monk's cell. The University of Pisa keeps a natural history museum here, featuring a large taxonomy collection centred around a dinosaur and an articulated giraffe skeleton. Just west of Pisa is the Tenuta di San Rossore, once the summer estate of Italy's president. In 1988 it was turned into a publicly owned park system along with a few other areas along the coast and now forms part of one of Tuscany's most precious protected wildlife areas. The area is a coastal zone of dense pines with populations of wild deer, boars and aquatic birds, which is surrounded by several beaches and some boggy wetlands. Although it isn't open to the public often, it is well worth the free visit, and is open from 08:30 to 17:30 in winter, and to 21:30 in summer. If you’ve seen enough art from the region, visit Livorno to the south. The city is Tuscany's second-largest but is perhaps unique in the region for its lack of art. The seafood in its restaurants, though, is some of the best in the country, and its back-street canals add a quasi-Venetian romantic touch to this Tuscan city. The green islands of the Tuscan archipelago sitting off the Etruscan Riviera shoreline have some fine beaches and fantastic nature preserves, although most are off limits unless you're doing time in one of their high-security prisons. The most famous of the group, Elba, is a popular summer tourist destination and Italy's third-largest island. Elba is famous as the short-lived kingdom of the exiled Napoléon and popular for its colourful fishing towns, island cuisine, inland hiking and beaches.
