What to see by car: Rimini
The Province of Rimini covers the southern part of the Romagna region's coastline.
Here the Apennines reach out as far as the sea itself, so that the hills are only
a short distance from the famous sandy beaches. Distinguishing features of the
land include: the valleys of the Marecchia and Conca rivers; the hills; and the
ancient castles, churches and villages hidden deep in the fertile green countryside.
After you've finished relaxing in the city, take a day excursion to the outlying
areas of the province. A good daytrip is to the nearby Marecchia Valley. This
beautiful area, flanked by rocky hills, retains traces of one of the earliest
Italic civilizations, the Villanovians.
A drive farther around the Romangda region will reveal more beautiful coastal
areas and the spectacular Apennines Mountains. Alternatively, perched over Rimini
and the Adriatic Sea stands the ancient Republic of San Marino with its towers
rising from Mount Titano.
Additionally, Rimini Province boasts fairs, popular festivals, traditional
crafts and areas of historic interest. Some exciting places to visit include:
Verucchio, cradle of the Malatesta dynasty; Poggio Berni, where the mills once
stood; Montescudo, with the remains of its castle still surrounded by unspoilt
countryside; and Torriana with its architectural jewels Montebello and Saiano.
Also stop by San Giovanni in Marignano, granary of the Malatestas; Morciano,
the market town; and Gemmano with its superb wildlife oasis, Onferno.
You may notice the beautiful tablecloths which grace tables throughout the
Romagna region. Traditional old workshops producing the fabrics for these tablecloths
can be found in Santarcangelo and Rimini. Wrought iron is produced by skilled
craftsmen in Mondaino and Montegridolfo; while the ancient workshops of Montefiore
and Montecolombo make ceramics and terracotta.
