Mini guide to Rome

Beloved of Caesars, Popes, artists and the style-conscious, the eternal city
of Rome retains its magic and sense of wonder, despite the appalling traffic.
Whether you are looking to see where gladiators fought to the death or where
masters of the Renaissance worked, or just want to sample scrumptious Italian
food, this ancient city will not leave you disappointed.
One of the best areas to walk around is the Forum, which is the former centre
of Imperial Rome. Here you can visit the Temple of the Vestal Virgins; see the
Senate where Julius Caesar was murdered, and travel to the tomb of Romulus,
Rome's founder. Nearby is Palatine Hill where the emperors resided, and the
still awe-inspiring Coliseum where men and beasts met their deaths before baying
spectators.
By car you can discover: the Appian Way, the catacombs, the historic Lazio
countryside, magnificent Tivoli Gardens, and Castelli Romani (walled hill towns)
which dot the region.
Rome is defined by the river Tiber and the seven hills on which it is built.
The Tiber flows through Rome before entering the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was named
the Tiberius after the Emperor Tiberius, who drowned in it, and is 405kms long
and 20m deep at its greatest depth.
Rome's early history was dominated by the Roman Empire; its sometimes great,
often mad emperors who controlled much of the Mediterranean world made Rome
a powerful and rich city of over one million inhabitants. Following a period
of decline after the Empire's fall, Rome became the residence of the Pope and
the centre of Catholic Christianity, an importance demonstrated by the splendour
of the Vatican's buildings and artworks. It became the united Italy's capital
in 1866 and survived widespread destruction during WWII, when it was liberated
by Allied forces in 1944.
To get to Rome by car, take the Autostrada del Sol, which is the main road
artery linking northern Italy to the southern portion of the country. Termini
railway station serves the rest of the country regularly and comfortably. Rome's
main airport is Leonardi di Vinci, which is served frequently by international
carriers.
