A popular walking tour, which reveals the glory that was ancient Rome, begins at the Via Sacra in the Forum and finishes at the Circus Maximus. It takes over five hours and, despite the traffic, reveals the grandeur of the most famous ancient empire.

In the Roman Forum, you can take in sights such as the Senate House, which housed the Roman senators who governed Rome before the emperors ruled and is where Caligula had his horse appointed senator. It is also where Julius Caesar was famously murdered. In the Forum you can also see the reputed tomb of Romulus, Rome's founder, and the ruins of the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, as well as numerous other once-grand dwellings.

From here, head up the Clivus Palatinus to the Palatine Hill where Rome first became a city. You can visit the Flavian Palace, which housed the Roman emperor and was filled with gold and marble decorations. Little remains except for the foundations and tantalising glimpses of the sumptuous surroundings befitting the world's most powerful ruler. To the left of the Flavian Palace and towards the Circus Maximus is the Hippodrome or Stadium of Domitian, whose enormous structure held private games for the amusement of the emperor.

Leaving the forum, you pass by the Coliseum, whose huge crumbling, oval bulk is the greatest monument of ancient Rome, and which still has the ability to conjure up images of gladiators in combat.

Walking on from here, you come to Trajan's market. You can wander among the ruins of this huge market below the level of Rome's modern streets. This is also near the imposing Trajan's Column, which depicts the emperor's victory over the Dacians.

The tour finishes at the Circus Maximus, whose ruins once housed the 250,000 people who came to watch the chariot races staged there. It was last used in 549 AD by Totilla the Goth, who tried to recreate the glory of the Roman Empire and failed miserably.
