What to see by car: Rome

A first stop for those travelling by car is the world famous Tivoli Gardens, which rest on a hilltop north of the city and have been popular with visitors for more than a millennium.

There are many more fine examples of antiquity along the ancient Appian Way heading out towards Brindisi, including the Circus of Maxentius and Roman tombs. This route also passes the catacombs - caves carved into the volcanic rock which once acted as burial places for Rome's persecuted Christians. In these ancient Christian hideouts you can still see graffiti showing the sign of the fish, which was the symbol of early Christianity before the crucifix became more popular.

Ostia Antica is a fascinating ancient port at the mouth of the Tiber, and the ruins there provide a bold contrast to the more famous ruins at Pompeii. There are plenty of other ruins such as: Porta Romana, the Terme di Nettuno baths and the mosaic-filled Piazzale delle Corporazioni.

Many Romans also flock to the Castelli Romani (Roman Castles), which aren't really castles but fortified ancient hill towns. The closest to Rome is Marino, which during its grape harvest in October, switches the town's fountains from spurting water to gushing forth wine, making it an unsurprisingly popular destination during this time.

Northern Lazio is green and wooded with undulating hills hinting at the northern landscapes of Tuscany and Umbria. The only remains of the pre-Roman Etruscan civilization are scattered on sites along this coast. If you want to swim, head inland to lakes Bracciano, Vico or Bolsena - playgrounds for many Romans on hot summer weekends.

Southern Lazio has a very different feel, giving way to flatter marshy lands, and the coastal resorts of Terracina and Sperlonga.
