Historical interest: Rome

Rome has one of the most varied and fascinating histories on earth, and has
been at the centre of Europe for much of its existence.
The most significant early event was the changing of Rome from a Republic to
a city ruled by emperors, following the assassination of Julius Caesar and the
ascendancy of Augustus in 44 BC. Following a period of expansion and then decay
due to the inadequacies of its rulers, the next hugely important event was the
conversion to Christianity of the emperor Constantine, who then made Christianity
the official religion of the empire. The decline couldn't be reversed though,
and Rome eventually fell to barbarians in 475 AD, thus ushering in the Dark
Ages across Europe.
Rome still retained a powerful influence as the residence of the Pope. His
power was emphasised in 1065 when he called for a crusade to recapture the Holy
Land from Muslim invaders. Rome also managed to survive the scare caused by
the Anti-Pope movement in the 14th century, when a rival pontiff was established
in Avignon in France.
The 15th century saw the Renaissance sweep through Italy, and many of the master
artists and sculptors provided works for the Vatican's collection. Michelangelo
began his famous work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in 1508.
In 1796, Rome became the centre of Italian nationalism as Napoleon swept through
the peninsula. However, the city had to wait until 1861 before it was finally
declared the capital of a united kingdom.
Rome was also the capital of Mussolini's fascist dictatorship. Mussolini, in
a bid to recreate the glory of the Roman emperors and to legitimise his government,
ordered the renovations which uncovered many of the ancient ruins seen today.
His regime was defeated when Allied forces captured Rome in 1944.
Rome continues to hold the seat of power for Italy, even though it is nearer
the country's impoverished south than the northern industrial cities of Milan
and Turin.
