Travelling to Siracusa
Siracusa is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, which
is off the south coast of the boot of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. Travelling
from the port of Messina, head south on the A18 and continue on the E45 south
of Catania to Siracusa (approximately two hours). From Palermo take the A19
south and east, right onto the A18, then head south on the E45 (approximately
three hours).
The bus from Catania regularly makes the one hour, 30 minute trip to Syracuse;
but from other major cities in Sicily, Syracuse is best reached by train. It
is one hour, 30 minutes from Catania; two hours from Taormina; and five hours
from Palermo. Usually you must transfer in Catania. Trains arrive in Syracuse
at the station on Via Francesco Crispi, centrally located midway between the
Archaeological Park and Ortygia Island. There are direct express trains from
Milan and Rome to Palermo, Catania and Siracusa, which take at least 10 hours.
The nearest airport to Siracusa is Catania's Aeroporto Fontanarossa, which
is served by Alibus, leaving about every 20 minutes from the airport and the
central train station and taking around 25 minutes to reach the city. Alternatively
fly to Palermo's Punta Raisi airport; buses run every half hour to the city
centre and central train station. Both airports are served by domestic and international
carriers from many countries in Europe.
Ferries enter Siracusa from Valletta in Malta and from Catania daily. Most
ships from Naples arrive at Palermo; it's about 11 hours by overnight ferry
and four hours by hydrofoil.
