Hotels Siracusa
What to see by car: Siracusa
There are some beautiful beaches outside Siracusa and a drive into the hinterlands
will also reveal many ancient treasures. Syracuse can be roasting in the summer
so a trip to the beach is a good option, with the finest beach being Fontane
Bianche, about 19kms south on the SS115. Lido Arenella beach is on the way but
not as popular.
The boat-shaped Castello Eurialo, northwest of the town, is one of the most
evocative and formidable Greek fortresses to have survived from ancient times.
The castle was adapted and fortified by Archimedes, the famous mathematician
who was born in Syracuse in 287 BC. From the castle precincts, you can enjoy
a spectacular panorama back over Syracuse.
North of Siracusa and perched on a rocky promontory at the foot of Mount Etna,
looking out over the azure blue Mediterranean, is the town of Taormina. The
main attraction is the remains of the Greek city that was located at about the
same spot as the present day town. The Greek Amphitheatre (Teatro Greco) is
Taormina's most visited monument, offering a view of the rare beauty of Mount
Etna and the seacoast.
In the Hellenistic period, the Greeks hewed the theatre out of the rocky slope
of Mount Tauro, and the Romans remodelled and modified it greatly. Taormina's
Greek theatre is the site of the annual Taormina film festival. Also on the
premises is an museum containing artefacts from the classical and early Christian
periods.
