Travelling to Sorrento
By car to Sorrento, regardless of what direction you are coming from, take the
highway to Naples. Follow the A3 to the Sorrentine Peninsula and take the Castellamare
di Stabia exit. From Castellamare, drive along the main road for about 23kms,
passing the villages of Vico Equense and Sant'agnello before coming to Sorrento,
the last village. The state road can be busy from June to September, during the
height of the tourist season, and it may sometimes take more than an hour to drive
the 23kms from Castellamare to Sorrento.
By rail, the train station Napoli Centrale Piazza Garibaldi in Naples is linked
to Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana local trains. As soon as you get to Napoli
Centrale, take the stairs to the underground to find the Circumvesuviana station.
The journey from Naples takes about an hour and is usually comfortable. The
trains are most often crowded but are still the fastest and cheapest way to
reach Sorrento.
The airport nearest to Sorrento, Capodichino, is only 50kms away. It is linked
to the main Italian and European towns by many different airlines. From the
airport there are several ways to get to Sorrento. The most comfortable, and
the cheapest, is the bus service by Curreri.
The bus is just outside the arrival gate and takes you straight to Piazza Tasso,
the main square of Sorrento (one hour). An alternative, but more costly option,
is to take a taxi or utilize the transfer services that the most agencies in
Sorrento offer. From the airport, there are also buses, taxi and shuttles to
the Circumvesuviana rail station from where you can catch the local trains to
Sorrento every half-hour, or to Beverello port where hydrofoils and ferries
to Sorrento can be found.
If you are in the town centre of Naples, it can be fun to reach Sorrento by
sea. There are different hydrofoils and ferries linking Naples to Sorrento;
depending on which service you choose, the trip should take about 40 minutes.
The journey is more comfortable than the train but also about double the price.
The hydrofoils and ferries take you to the port of Sorrento, 500m from the town
centre; you can take a shuttle bus to town from the small square by the port.
