Hotels Sorrento
What to see by car: Sorrento
Sorrento makes a good base from which to explore outlying attractions. World famous
islands such as Capri and Ischia, with their exclusive atmospheres, are just a
short ferry trip away. Unforgettable places such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello
or the precious archaeological sites extending from Baia to Herculaneum and Pompeii
are also near.
From Sorrento, aboard the SS Amalfitana 163, it is possible reach Positano,
with its typical white houses solidly anchored onto the mountain and winding
roads full of shops; or Amalfi, with its majestic Cathedral in the Arabian-Norman
style.
Capri is an island of limestone rock that represents the outermost tip of the
mountain chain on the Sorrentine peninsula. The coastline, whose dolomite cliffs
fall right to the sea in many spots, is dotted with countless caves and surrounded
by reefs whose shapes suggest fantastic creations. Mount Tiberio (334m), to
the east, and Mount Solaro (589m), to the west are the two main peaks on the
island.
Ischia is the biggest island in the Gulf of Naples. It is a volcano island
and it is constantly altered by quakes generating thermal and radioactive waters.
It is characterized by a beautiful and varied coastline, with wonderful beaches,
coves and ravines that make it really fascinating.
Herculaneum, once called Heracleia, is an ancient town lying 8kms from Naples,
on the western slopes of Mount Vesuvius. It is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating
towns of the Naples area. It is not only famous as an important archeological
site, but also as a lively town which offers a variety of beautiful scenery
and invaluable art treasures.
Procida is the smallest island of the Gulf of Naples. It isn't as famous as
the other islands of the Gulf; however, it is still rich in attractions.
Ravello is one of the most attractive destinations on the Amalfi Coast. It
is famous for its views and its gardens. The town was once part of the Republic
of Amalfi, but now it is a peaceful historic village popular with tourists and
honeymooners. The principal Ravello tourist attractions are the two famous gardens:
Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.
Pompeii and Ercolano can be reached by Circumvesuviana trains. Caserta, with
its sumptuous royal palace, and Cassino, home of the famous Benedictine Abbey,
are connected to Naples by rail.
