What to see by car: Trieste
Trieste's location at the head of the Adriatic places it perfectly for exploring
many rewarding destinations within a day's drive. These include the unusual
Dolomites (good for skiing or hiking), tiny Slovenia with its picturesque Alpine
lakes and the fantastic Dalmatian coast of Croatia.
Nearby are several other interesting destinations for daytrips. Tergeste preserves
interesting Roman, Medieval and neo-classic monuments and is an important centre
for artistic, historical and scientific collections. Other attractions include
the famous Castle of Miramare, the Carso, the Caves of Postojna and Skocjan,
the Rosandra Valley, the Castle of Duino, as well as the Istrian coastline in
nearby Slovenia and Croatia.
Muggia is a pretty little town on the Slovenian border. The old town centre
contains a beautiful harbour surrounded by a maze of old, narrow streets. This
area has been recently renovated and is dominated by a magnificent 14th century
castle. A few kilometres away from the town centre stands the Romanesque basilica
of Santa Maria Assunta. Muggia is also home to an enormous tourist complex -
Porto San Rocco - which contains hotels, sports grounds, restaurants, boat moorings
and other tourist attractions. It was built on the site of a shipyard where
world-renowned ship builders once plied their trade.
Nearby, and definitely not to be missed is the Risiera di San Sabba - the only
Nazi concentration camp to have been built in Italy. Visiting the cells here,
walking around the grounds and viewing the exhibited photos of the atrocities
which were committed is a highly moving experience.
A few kilometres past the train station in Trieste is the splendid Miramare
Castle, ill-fortuned residence of Maximillian of Habsburg who was murdered by
the Emperor of Mexico while in South America. Visiting the castle and surrounding
parkland is a must for any visitor to the city.
Farther afield, the Carso offers a beautiful unique landscape, characterised
by white, limestone rock. The flora in the region is exceptionally rich, despite
the fact that there is very little water there. It is all filtered underground
into large deep cavities known as foibe. The territory is dotted with low-lying
areas, woodland, clearings, moors and canyons as well as eroded rock faces.
If you have some time left over, visit Foiba di Basovizza. This is the site
where thousands of Italians were incarcerated in the gigantic underground cavities
of the Carso during WWII after speaking out against the government.
