What to see by foot: Turin
 
The north-western Italian city of Turin lures tourists with its charming old
city centre, magnificent churches and superb museums. These assets, together
with its convenient location, make Turin an excellent holiday destination.
The world renowned and famously controversial Shroud of Turin, or Santissima
Sindone (Holy Shroud), is the city's most notable attraction. Housed in the
magnificent 15th century Duomo, the Shroud draws thousands of visitors each
year, each hoping for a glimpse of the sacred relic.
The Shroud is supposedly the one that Joseph of Arimathea wrapped around the
body of Christ when he was removed from the cross. It is said that this 3.5m-length
of linen reveals the agonized features of a man who suffered crucifixion. The
face on the cloth is complete with a crown of thorns. No one has successfully
put forth a scientific explanation as to why the imprints of the man on the
cloth exist or even how its image became impregnated in the threads.
The church that houses the Shroud of Turin is also worthwhile touring and features
stunning artwork and architectural design. For those seeking a more in-depth
background on the Shroud, there is the Museo della Sindone.
Other noteworthy churches include: Gran Madre di Dio, Santuario della Consolata
and San Lorenzo. The ornate castles of the area are worth a visit: Castello
Valentino, Borgo e Castello Medioevale and Rocca Medioevale.
If you like the glamour of palaces, visit Palazzo Carignano, Palazzo Madama
and Palazzo Reale along with the impressive Porta Palatina. Art and history
buffs can indulge in the many museums scattered around the city, including:
Museo Nazionale della Montagna Duca degli Abruzzi, Museo dell'Automobile, Museo
Nazionale del Risorgimento, Museo Civico dell'Arte Antica, Armeria Reale and
Biblioteca Reale.
