What to see by car: Turin
Turin is the capital of Piedmont in north-western Italy, bordering on France
in the west and on Switzerland in the north. Piedmont is divided into the provinces
of Alessandria, Asti, Cuneo, Novara, Turin and Vercelli. The mostly mountainous
and hilly region has the Alps in the north and west and the Apennines in the
south, and is lovely to explore by car.
Near Turin is the magnificent Basilica di Superga, which affords stunning views
of the city and the Alps. Also close to the city is the spectacular Stupinigi
Palace. For more intriguing Piedmonte region towns, seek out Alba, Saluzzo and
Asti; outdoor enthusiasts can head for Sestriere, Monviso, or the Valle d'Aosta
region.
For some lovely views, start at Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The neoclassical square
was designed by Frizzi (1815-30). It was from a café under the porticoes
on the right side of the square that the first RAI radio broadcast - a piano
concert - was transmitted. The panorama is breathtaking, including a view of
the Church of the Gran Madre, the 17th century Villa della Regina, the Basilica
of Superga and the Colle dei Cappuccini. Nearby, the Church of Santa Maria del
Monte houses the collection of the Museo della Montagna (Mountain Museum).
Nature lovers can visit Parco della Colletta, at the confluence of the Dora
and the Po, where many bird species have chosen to live and nest. Nearby, the
steep and scenic Strada Comunale di Superga allows you to reach the large square
at the top of the hill very quickly. Here stands one of Filippo Juvarra's and
the Baroque's greatest masterpieces, the Basilica. It was built between 1714
and 1731 to fulfill a vow made before the Battle of Turin by Duke Vittorio Amedeo
II.
The Cappella del Voto, or Chapel of the Vow, to the left of the High Altar,
houses the 17th century painted wood statue before which the duke kneeled to
pray for protection for the city. In the crypt below the basilica are buried
the Savoy kings from Vittorio Amedeo II to Carlo Alberto.
From Superga it is possible to travel an 8km section of scenic road through
the Parco Naturale della Collina di Superga. If you wish, you can continue by
car as far as the Colle della Maddalena which, at 715m, is the highest of the
hills round Turin.
