Mini guide to Venice

Words do not do justice to the beauty and wonder of Venice. Visitors head to
the city in droves to marvel at Renaissance works of art, religious iconography,
medieval churches and palaces. As you explore the mysteries of Venice's timeless
streets and discover the canals via gondola, you will be mesmerised by the city's
unique grandeur.
If you have a short time to walk around Venice then be sure to visit St Mark's
Square - home to pigeons, musicians, St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace.
The Basilica is one of the world's most spectacular churches, with its imposing
dome and famous bronze horses. The Doge's Palace boasts a throne room, golden
staircase and the Bridge of Sighs leading to the prison where Casanova was incarcerated.
After exploring Venice's old city, take an excursion to the nearby islands
of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Murano is world-famous for its glass factories
and glassworks. Burano is known for its intricate lace; and timeless Torcello
is home to an imposing Byzantine cathedral.
Venice has a history as colourful as its pastel shaded houses. Rising from
humble beginnings, it dominated the eastern Mediterranean economically and militarily
from 1204 to 1453 before declining under Turkish pressure. The Republic ended
with defeat to Napoleon in 1797 and Venice's independence was lost forever when
it joined a united Italy in 1866. Much of the time since then has been spent
promoting tourism and trying to protect itself against devastating floods like
those in 1966.
The historic core of Venice is comprised of 117 mudflats or islets, dissected
by natural canals - the biggest of which is the Grand Canal. Over centuries
these sand and mud islets have grown together to form one mass through man-made
alterations including filled-in canals and bridges.
To reach Venice by car, take the A4 from Milan or Trieste. Direct trains from
Milan, Bologna and Padua, as well as from across Europe terminate at the Grand
Central Station. Buses from major cities in Europe stop at the Piazzale Roma.
Marco Polo Airport has daily flights from London and other European cities.
